homes for modern living

Completed Projects

\ West Seattle Renovation

This home, built in 1954, had all the charm of a garage – literally, since that's all you could see from the street. With goals of reducing the garage’s profile and bringing the home back to its Mid-Century roots, the house was transformed.

The footprint was unchanged yet by adding a story, the overall impact of the up-front garage was minimized, allowing a true ode to the past to be created. A butterfly roof was employed, allowing natural light to stream in from all sides and giving panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Peninsula and the Olympics.

The main floor was opened up to create a large communal space comprised of kitchen, living and dining, with a spacious powder room tucked in the back. The new top story added a spacious master suite looking west to the views, two additional bedrooms, a full bath, laundry and shared balcony with a perfectly-framed view of Mt. Rainier.

The new butterfly roof is both beautiful and functional - giving the home a playful feel while providing lots of light throughout. The translucent garage door helps minimize the proportion of the garage to the house - a much needed change.
